Notes
I include under the heading of Dungeons & Dragons its "clones," those games which were written to mimic or replace obsolete editions. These are listed following the edition they are intended to mimic.
The two incarnation of World of Darkness treat their sub-sets differently. In the old/original/classic version, the various incarnations were independent games in a vaguely shared setting--with the exception of Mummy (which can be played with any core book, though was designed as a Vampire sub-game), each was an independent game that did not require any other game to be played. The new incarnation, renamed "Chronicles of Darkness" after the revival of the earlier game, is a common rule-set treating the sub-sets as settings.
What I treat as a single game under the heading of Heroes Unlimited is actually 2 or 3 games according to the publisher: 1) Heroes Unlimited (several editions); and 2) Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles and Other Strangeness, while later becomes 3) After the Bomb. The rules for these games are very closely related (more so to each other than other Palladium Megaversal games), and are more easily compatible one with another without major conversion. There are even rules in each game for combining them into a single experience.
"Universal" RPG systems are those which claim to accommodate all genres of roleplaying without adaptation. Games which share a common system are not included in this category because that system is either A) tailored to a particular shared genre (d20 Modern, World of Darkness); or B) modified for each game it is used for (AGE, Megaversal, Unisystem). The games presented here are genre-free core rules that do not require severe modification. Note that Tri-State dX is listed here because it is a stripped down system, while BESM, SAS, ans AGOT are listed elsewhere.
Fiasco is not a traditional roleplaying game. I categorize it among my RPGs because it is a cooperative storytelling game dependent on dice rolling. It is, however, a unique experience unlike any other game on this list.
